Development diagrams and final concept write up- Steph (me) and Emma Tring

Me and Emma Tring started to mock up diagrams for the presentation, to provide context and description for our concept.

Josh designed these again to better suit the overall presentation aesthetic.

What is art / why is it important:

Art provides a means for escape that is still relevant to our everyday life

Encourages new perspectives and challenges worldview. Influencing our values, attitudes and beliefs It informs how we should acknowledge different cultures and communities an that there are ideas outside of the norm.

intro our metaphor:
There are two main metaphors within our concept. Within both urban and suburban sites the ‘lens’ changes perspective on immediate environments to provoke questions around art within suburban sites and act as a wayfinding system within urban sites.
Project arthur imitates human qualities as a representation of ‘art is living’ - he is the first interaction within urban sites that introduces this concept.

Len’s metaphor:

Arthur metaphor:
Arthur is life represented through tangible form, he embodies the notion that art is important in the everyday, becoming an extension of ourselves.

Intro concept:

Our concept takes place in multiple suburban and urban sites around Wellington. Suburban sites are to promote intrigue and inform communities about art and how it can influence life. It provides information about NZF and the acts that are apart of the festival through an experiential occurrence. Bringing exposure of NZF to the users within close proximity to their everyday, as we discovered most people did not know of NZF or what it brought to the city.

The urban installations are to create mystery around an object pre festival, for intrigue and exposure of art and NZF. Transforming into an experiential wayfinding and informative installation work directly related to acts within NZF.

How does our concept change perspective:
Our installation works are a literal interpretation that art changes one’s perspective of an environment. Using the ‘lens’ to manipulate a site that is part of that immediate users everyday, becoming an altered experience of a familiar occurrence. It poses the question, where does art fit within my life? Aims to challenge how one thinks about art, and how it can influence their perspective on the world around them. ‘Arthur’s’ role, within urban sites, is to provide an initial gateway to start this conversation about art as life. He also identifies NZF as a platform to enable a connection to art.

concept development (meta-group)

Fleshing out and developing what the suburban structure is, how it operates and links to the urban structures. We moved from a cube from to a cylindrical form. Went through user journey map to find pain points within our design. Lots of discussion and drawing lead to a finalised concept that we can now render up for presentation next week. We set a list of deliverables and set up another meta-group meeting to achieve these this weekend. Also set out to do a write up of the new concept.

Changing of perspective - art in the everyday life - making it seamless with the everyday by incorporating it into the everyday. gives a visual representation of how art changes our perspective on life and that’s why it benefits our life. Different view in which to see the everyday.

Why suburban:
designed to showcase local acts around wellington as a form of entertainment but also serve as a platform for artists in terms of exposure and encouraging the arts in our city.

We have envisioned a space that is dedicated to the public for them not only to be exposed to what the festival has to offer but to also get a taste of other mediums of art they may not have previously been interested not inclined to explore before.

The concept of the lens/ filters offers the users a chance to view a familiar environment in a new way. To provide a new perspective on themselves and the space they inhabit by manipulating the context they are observing.

Suburban Installation Monolith Concept

Concept development - Bryon

BRYON: (went to meta-group meeting - developed direction for concept)

ok guys, so i went to the meeting yesterday as well and we've come up with a concept that everyone likes.

So basically, noone else really liked the whole "container" idea but we agreed it had to be an indoor space that answers the question "why is art important" and also relays information to people in some way.

The concept we came up with is "Escape boxes", its basically a cube that you can enter to kind of escape from the hustle of daily life. We felt that this gave us an angle to answer the question "why is art important", which is art gives people a form of escapism from all the hectic chaos of their lives, where they can just be with their own thoughts and emotions.

The cube shape of this "room" will reference the monoliths that will be placed in the urban areas, and it will be big enough to hold 2-3 people comfortably. We also decided that we wanted it to be big enough for people to lie down in (therefore we also have to think of the materials the floor is made of so that its comfortable enough, maybe soft). Sound proofing the room would also be another good idea. It should feel homely and inviting enough for people to want to engage with it.

The walls of the cube were to be translucent or smoky, so when light/sunlight hits this cube, it would create unique textures and looks engaging when affected by people inside of the cube. But not have it too translucent so the people who are inside the cube feel a sense of privacy. This would also give us space to have it light up or project stuff on to it at night. The ceiling of the cube is to be fully clear and transparent, so when people are inside the cube and lying down, its like they are looking at an art piece (the sky) that is always changing, therefore the sides of the cube have to be seamless, this creates an interaction with the people as the scene they view out of the "window" (ceiling) will always be different and unique to each experience (rainy, sunny, stars etc).

So what we have to think about is concepts on how this is going to look, what its made from (materials) and some renders in space, maybe also a plan and elevation of this "cube room". We also have to think of seating and how information about the art festival can be relayed to people while they are engaging with the room (maybe on the walls inside?, light projection?). also very important is how people enter this room, like is it a door? how does it close? how big is it?

History - using text filler

Stuff I found out about these areas are that in Karori and Mirarmar they both have community fairs on mid Feb that could co-inside with our suburban NZF implementation. Looking closer at specific sites within these locations: Karori - Ben Brun park - Used for community fair and is right next to Victoria University Campus. Also looking a at an open space that is opposite from Ben Burn park that is a part of Victoria Campus.

Miramar - Central space out front of Roxy cinema, lots of access to pedestrians and to people visiting miramar. Also miramar school close to central shopping district provides a street side open space that could work well. Also looked at Shelly bay road just off the main entrance into Miramar - its visible from the main road but is a big open space - could play with the surrounding environment being on the waters edge.

Petone - Along the esplanade- road side view and access will be in good line of site to gain attention, also along the beach (could utilise this environment) is a public space within this suburb. Jackson street - can use this site during the jackson street fair? Thought the large car park that gives access to Petone pack n save, countdown, warehouse and Briscoes - large enough space occupied by a lot of people regularly (would get a lot of attention through high quantity of occupants within this site)
