concept development (meta-group)

Fleshing out and developing what the suburban structure is, how it operates and links to the urban structures. We moved from a cube from to a cylindrical form. Went through user journey map to find pain points within our design. Lots of discussion and drawing lead to a finalised concept that we can now render up for presentation next week. We set a list of deliverables and set up another meta-group meeting to achieve these this weekend. Also set out to do a write up of the new concept.

Worked on by, me, josh, helena, david, bryon, jasper, rain, zoe, mateyus.

Write up from first meet up:

Suburban:
Day - Statement: art piece installation creates  distorted view of the surrounding environment =

Night - Projections at night - live feed montage of acts (that have been on in the day) or previews/samples of artists works

Information - upcoming acts in the next 2 days
Info pre - tasters of artists and link to full timetable?
Info during - 2 days advance - rotating
Scan an icon - redirects to website for further information / platform.
(create own app - then it can recognise any symbol we want)
Hashtags / instagram
Blurb on what this thing is
NZF branding

Materials -
Heat distorted perspects
Will provide material tests

Alive through light and texture / projection = want to approach

information panel obvious to users to inform - outside
live feed acts info on inside

Feature stationary panel - purpose for information / digital display

Beacon at night - projection - light source

Prototype materials and light play to explore quality and atmosphere of these occurrences.

Projection, change the feed / content projected creating different distortion on these

How does it represent art makes life better?
Changing of perspective - art in the everyday life - making it seamless with the everyday by incorporating it into the everyday. gives a visual representation of how art changes our perspective on life and that’s why it benefits our life. Different view in which to see the everyday.
Brings life into your surroundings.

Create hype, awareness,
Time period - circles on ground to indicate space where something will appear ‘watch this space’
Circle light patches
Black acrylic bricks replaces some bricks to create a circle in the ground.
Footprints -
scratch map blackout - the outside surface of the circle panel (just info panel)
blacked out architecture

Why suburban:
designed to showcase local acts around wellington as a form of entertainment but also serve as a platform for artists in terms of exposure and encouraging the arts in our city.

We have envisioned a space that is dedicated to the public for them not only to be exposed to what the festival has to offer but to also get a taste of other mediums of art they may not have previously been interested not inclined to explore before.
Urban:

Wayfinding, art component,
initial intrigue

pulsate prior - only one wall initially vibration and light - make it warm
Black semi circle wall - light from edges projects onto surrounding architecture

Information / symbol - NZF recognition

Urban Pre - Info panel stand alone not turned on Wk1
Wk2 - transform - panel comes alive - pulsate

[Both reveal at the same time Urban and suburban]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Write up from second meet up:
What is art - why important

How can we change perspective and why it’s important to do so

Intro our metaphor - rose tint glasses, poetic

Intro concept

Logistics and operation
Narrative
Timeline

* interpretation of the everyday.
  • Human characteristics - art is living and apart of life
  • Monoliths are made for facilitating information - learn from it.
  • Abstract but also literal representation of how art is intertwined within life
  • Familiar context - provide a new look onto this..lens.
  • Transformational in perspective and worldview
  • Starting a conversation

Human characteristics
Perspective

  • monolith is the start of the conversation
personified as a living thing that will..

Concept statements:

Lens :
The concept of the lens/ filters offers the users a chance to view a familiar environment in a new way. To provide a new perspective on themselves and the space they inhabit by manipulating the context they are observing.

Intertwines art as a part of the everyday
Monolith:
The monolith embodies

Group brainstorming:
working our presentation and delegating task. Refining what our concept actually is.

Concept development - Bryon

BRYON: (went to meta-group meeting - developed direction for concept)
ok guys, so i went to the meeting yesterday as well and we've come up with a concept that everyone likes.
So basically, noone else really liked the whole "container" idea but we agreed it had to be an indoor space that answers the question "why is art important" and also relays information to people in some way.
The concept we came up with is "Escape boxes", its basically a cube that you can enter to kind of escape from the hustle of daily life. We felt that this gave us an angle to answer the question "why is art important", which is art gives people a form of escapism from all the hectic chaos of their lives, where they can just be with their own thoughts and emotions.
The cube shape of this "room" will reference the monoliths that will be placed in the urban areas, and it will be big enough to hold 2-3 people comfortably. We also decided that we wanted it to be big enough for people to lie down in (therefore we also have to think of the materials the floor is made of so that its comfortable enough, maybe soft). Sound proofing the room would also be another good idea. It should feel homely and inviting enough for people to want to engage with it.
The walls of the cube were to be translucent or smoky, so when light/sunlight hits this cube, it would create unique textures and looks engaging when affected by people inside of the cube. But not have it too translucent so the people who are inside the cube feel a sense of privacy. This would also give us space to have it light up or project stuff on to it at night. The ceiling of the cube is to be fully clear and transparent, so when people are inside the cube and lying down, its like they are looking at an art piece (the sky) that is always changing, therefore the sides of the cube have to be seamless, this creates an interaction with the people as the scene they view out of the "window" (ceiling) will always be different and unique to each experience (rainy, sunny, stars etc).
So what we have to think about is concepts on how this is going to look, what its made from (materials) and some renders in space, maybe also a plan and elevation of this "cube room". We also have to think of seating and how information about the art festival can be relayed to people while they are engaging with the room (maybe on the walls inside?, light projection?). also very important is how people enter this room, like is it a door? how does it close? how big is it?

Starting location info doc possibly for presentation:

History - using text filler

Stuff I found out about these areas are that in Karori and Mirarmar they both have community fairs on mid Feb that could co-inside with our suburban NZF implementation. Looking closer at specific sites within these locations: Karori - Ben Brun park - Used for community fair and is right next to Victoria University Campus. Also looking a at an open space that is opposite from Ben Burn park that is a part of Victoria Campus.

Miramar - Central space out front of Roxy cinema, lots of access to pedestrians and to people visiting miramar. Also miramar school close to central shopping district provides a street side open space that could work well. Also looked at Shelly bay road just off the main entrance into Miramar - its visible from the main road but is a big open space - could play with the surrounding environment being on the waters edge.

Petone - Along the esplanade- road side view and access will be in good line of site to gain attention, also along the beach (could utilise this environment) is a public space within this suburb. Jackson street - can use this site during the jackson street fair? Thought the large car park that gives access to Petone pack n save, countdown, warehouse and Briscoes - large enough space occupied by a lot of people regularly (would get a lot of attention through high quantity of occupants within this site)

These images provided information for my team to start rendering from to visualise concept in a site specific location.

  • MEET UP WITH MEG END OF WEEK ON FRIDAY

Shem - initial concept write up

NZFF Proposal We have conceptualised the idea of having pop up containers as part of our NZFF proposal. We have envisioned a space that is dedicated to the public for them not only to be exposed to what the festival has to offer but to also get a taste of other mediums of art they may not have previously been interested not inclined to explore before. Our vision is an open space open to all members of the public. Two containers will set up residence in a large open space in three different suburbs, each for a week at a time to cover the whole three weeks of the festivals duration. The two containers will be positioned slightly facing each other at an angle to provide a middle area where the public can relax, interact and be entertained. One of the containers will serve as an entertainer area, a stage that will be designed to showcase local acts around wellington as a form of entertainment but also serve as a platform for artists in terms of exposure and encouraging the arts in our city. The other container will serve as a hub designed to entertain and entice the audiences in the space. Interactive iPads built in with an app especially designed for the festival will serve as a tool to get the public excite, informed and also showcase the events and acts happening in the festival, with the option to also be able to purchase tickets for different acts on-site. These two containers will be designed and set up with a minimal feel to keep the focus on the entertainment, music, food and people that are creating the vibes in the place. These Pop-up containers will integrate well into the big open spaces of the suburbs that we are proposing to set up in, as this gives the crowds plenty of space to enjoy themselves on the beanbags, benches and blankets that will be set up in between the two slightly adjacent trucks. As well as the entertainment and the interactive hub, we have proposed a collaboration with some of the local food and eatery place in wellington to come in and join us, where it be a coffee, pizza or Mexican stall; to not only further give them exposure to the people on the outskirts of the city, but also a leverage for us in creating this space, as we seek to enhance the audience experience as much as possible. Our proposed idea aims to help bring the art to the people. The concept of reaching out and infiltrating the spaces these people inhabit, rather than them seeking for these spaces, will encourage not only word of mouth amongst the people in the area, but will gain NZFF wide exposure across a wide range of age ranges and different walks of life. We hope that by creating this set-up the audiences will gain a further appreciation for the acts that NZFF are bringing into our city, as well as exposure to the local acts, music and food that they may not have encountered or inclined to try before.
